Propagates, cultivates, fertilizes and otherwise cares for plants in a nursery; and performs other related duties as required.

Current Vacancies:
Performs a variety of work such as propagating, cultivating, fertilizing, pruning, planting, care and maintenance of plants and trees in nurseries and tree farms, landscaping and maintenance of lawns, planting strips, traffic medial and islands, park grounds, bikeways and gardens and other areas under the maintenance jurisdiction of this branch.  May work solely in remote secluded mountainous areas, where there is no drinking water, restroom, or electricity.  Handles and uses chemicals and works in areas treated with chemicals.  The use of protective equipment may be required due to possible exposure to toxic/noxious fumes and substances.  Safety practices and procedures are used.

There are four (4) vacancies with the Department of Parks and Recreation, Urban Forestry Division.  Work schedule is from Monday to Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., but may vary.  May be required to work after hours, evenings, weekends, or holidays to apply pesticides, herbicides, etc., for other special projects and events, and emergency callouts.  This list may be used to fill future vacancies in this department.

 Minimum Qualification Requirements:
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: 
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and cultivation of plants, including the propagation of various plants. 

Such experience must have demonstrated the knowledge of a variety of trees and plants, their care and propagation; practices, tools, equipment and materials used in nursery work; plant diseases and pests and effective methods of controlling them; various commercial fertilizers and their use, etc.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of an appropriate valid Hawaii State driver's license, as required.  

Current vacancies:
The current positions require the following licenses and certificates:
  1. Valid Hawaii driver's license (Type 3), prior to appointment.
  2. Pulmonary Function Test (PFT), prior to appointment.
  3. Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test, prior to appointment.
  4. Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's certificate, prior to appointment.
  5. First Aid/CPR certificates, prior to completion of probation.
NOTE:  All of the above licenses and certificates must be obtained by the time indicated above, and maintained throughout the course of employment as a Nursery Worker I.

In addition to meeting the above minimum qualifications, your application will be further evaluated. Your score will be based on the quality and quantity and/or recency of your education and experience.
