Duties and Responsibilities
1. HIGP seeks applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty member at the Associate (R4) level in cosmochemistry (the microanalysis of meteorites, extraterrestrial dust and returned samples) and/or materials science. The successful applicant will join a vigorous, entrepreneurial research institute with an international reputation in planetary science and cosmochemistry. We seek a researcher with strong interest and experience in the analysis of materials using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). Expertise in focused ion beam (FIB) sample preparation and an interest in collaborating in cross-disciplinary and cross-instrument research are desirable. The successful applicant will be expected to oversee the creation of a new TEM microscopy facility at HIGP/SOEST and to develop an outstanding research program in cosmochemistry and materials science. The facility will be available to faculty and students from HIGP/SOEST and other units within the University of Hawaii. Other duties and responsibilities include teaching courses in his/her area of specialty as well as mentoring graduate students and post docs. The level of State support will be equivalent to nine (9) months per year, with the remaining three (3) months to be raised through extramural funds.
Minimum Qualifications
1. A Ph.D. in planetary science, materials science, or a closely-related field received no later than January 2012; at least 5 years of experience in operating a state-of-the-art (S)TEM; a demonstrated record of extramural research funding, publications, and collaborations; demonstrated ability to plan and organize research activities including effective interactions with students and/or assistants when appropriate; and the demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in area of specialty.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Interest in collaborating in cross-disciplinary and cross-instrument materials science research.
