* To begin August 1, 2012 or as soon thereafter as possible. This is a 1.00 FTE position with .75 FTE in the School of Architecture (position number 0070245) and .25 FTE in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, Sea Grant College Program (position number 0085964).

Duties and Responsibilities

1. The University of Hawai i at Manoa (UHM) is undertaking a strategic inter-disciplinary initiative focused on marine coastal sustainability. With the support of the UHM Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw, the initiative seeks a team of five tenure-track faculty (four [4] Assistant-level and one [1] Associate/Full-level) in complementary disciplines who can significantly contribute to this strategic effort. The initiative is aimed at synergizing inter-disciplinary research, teaching and outreach that address important aspects of island life, and thereby strives to maintain the qualities of life that make Hawai i unique.
2. The term sustainability describes a longstanding ethic involving peoples relationships with the environment and the current generation s responsibilities to future generations. Implicit is responsibility to address today s issues, needs and aspirations while ensuring the capacity of our descendents to provide for their future. While Hawai i s people are faced with special challenges associated with their geographic isolation, fragile ecosystems, limited space and natural resources, they are fortunate to have a wide range of renewable energy opportunities, and a cultural tradition of living within the capacity of their island habitats and ecosystems to meet their needs. UHM is committed to developing the knowledge and the human resources that will allow our State and Nation to address the opportunities presented by the responsibility to live sustainably within our marine coastal ecosystem.
3. The University of Hawai i at Manoa seeks applications from interested and qualified candidates for five (5) new tenure-track faculty positions; four (4) at the Assistant level (R-3/I-3) and one (1) at the Associate (R-4/I-4) or Full level (R-5/I-5), with the more senior position to be assigned to a specific unit on the basis of the applicant pool. The level of State support will be equivalent to nine (9) months per year, with the remaining three (3) months to be raised through extramural funds. Appointments are made in partnering disciplinary units at 0.75 FTE and in the University of Hawai i at Manoa s Sea Grant College Program at 0.25 FTE.
4. The School of Architecture supports far-ranging collaborative work to shape the built and natural environment. The School s Faculty have a commitment to innovative thinking, design probity, environmental respect, and vital research for issues intrinsic to Hawai i, the Pacific Region and Asia. This focus includes the analysis of the cost/benefit of incorporating sustainable energy and water systems into architectural design and community planning.

6. Teach courses in his or her area of specialty.
7. Mentor graduate students and post docs.
8. Develop and conduct research with interdisciplinary partners as well as internal and external groups.
9. Seek extramural funding.
10. Participate in departmental, university and professional activities.
11. Conduct extension and outreach that enables the people of Hawai i to make informed decisions on the implementation of energy and water technologies in the coastal environment (through the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, Sea Grant College Program).

Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications

1. NAAB accredited professional degree in architecture.
2. Distinctive practice record and significant teaching and research experience.
3. Expertise in sustainable architecture, specifically within coastal communities.
4. Strengths in computational analysis and modeling, and sustainable architectural design methodologies.
5. Advanced, applied, architectural understanding of the use of integrated technologies, including passive design strategies, illustrating how architecture interacts with the environment.
6. Willingness to collaborate with researchers in other disciplines.
7. Demonstrated capacity for sustained high-quality research and community engagement.

Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications

1. In addition to the minimum qualifications of the Assistant Professor rank, minimum of four (4) years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of Assistant Professor (or equivalent), with evidence of increasing professional maturity; evidence of scholarly achievement comparable to peers at major research universities; demonstrated ability to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels; a productive research program; experience and skills in teaching and mentoring within a university-based program.

Professor Minimum Qualifications

1. In addition to the minimum qualification of the Associate Professor rank, evidence of excellence in teaching, a minimum of four (4) years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of Associate Professor (or equivalent), with evidence of increasing professional maturity; research productivity which has resulted in significant recognition by the national or international community of scholars active in the same field; demonstrated continuing participation in the scholarly and academic affairs of a university or other appropriate organization.

Desirable Qualifications

1. Professional license in architecture.
2. Ph.D. in architecture (or equivalent) in the area of specialization underpinned by a significant record of peer reviewed research and publication.
