* To begin approximately August 1, 2012, pending position clearance and availability of funds. UH Manoa plans to hire a scholar in Hawaiian music who will focus on the development of a program and curriculum integrating Native Hawaiian tradition, culture and language with our outstanding Music Department. In addition to regular teaching and research duties, the successful candidate is responsible for, leading dynamic learning communities and mentoring Native Hawaiian and other indigenous students, participating in service projects and activities at the college, university and community levels, and obtaining extramural funding on a regular basis. A pertinent component of the position is that 25% of the duties include partnering and engaging in relationship-building initiatives and activities with Hawai inuiakea School of Hawaiian Knowledge, the broader UH Manoa community, our community college partners, and state, national and international communities.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in music and Hawaiian music, including vocal Hawaiian music, which incorporates the history, values, language and culture of Native Hawaiians.
2. Develop academic curriculum and courses to support the development of a Hawaiian music program.
3. Foster, cultivate and facilitate partnerships and collaborations with community organizations and resources, community colleges and the UH system as well as within the college and UH Manoa institution. Partnerships may include indigenous communities within the Pacific and Asian regions.
4. Conduct research related to Hawaiian as well as other Pacific/indigenous music.
5. Serve as an academic resource for scholarly work.
6. Participate in performances according to area of specialization of the candidate.
7. Obtain extramural funding.
8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications

1. Master s degree in music.
2. Demonstrated knowledge in Hawaiian music, ethnomusicology and Hawaiian culture.
3. Record of scholarly achievement related to Native Hawaiian and/or other indigenous music.
4. Proficiency in Hawaiian language.
5. Experience working effectively with Native Hawaiian or other indigenous communities.
6. Demonstrated effectiveness and ability to teach, interact with, mentor and train, supervise, and/or collaborate with a variety of individuals, including colleagues, students, administration and community members, other national and international professionals within music schools and departments, and extramural funding agencies.
7. University teaching experience.

Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications

1. In addition to the Assistant Professor as stated above; minimum of five (5) years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of Assistant Professor, documentation of high quality teaching performance, high quality scholarly and/or creative contributions and service to the academic life of a college.

Professor Minimum Qualifications

1. In addition to the Associate Professor as stated above; minimum of five (5) years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of Associate Professor.

Desirable Qualifications

1. Doctoral degree (ABD considered).
2. Record of excellent evaluations of effective teaching.
3. Demonstrated capacity to obtain extramurally funded research.
4. Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in cross-disciplinary teams and projects pertaining to Hawaiian music.
5. Performance experience and ability.
6. Ability to teach Hawaiian music performance.
7. Experience in Hawaiian music related industry and experience with Hawaiian music production, including but not limited to performance, recording, industry, promotion or distribution.
8. Experience developing an interdisciplinary curriculum.
9. Record of regional, national and international indigenous activities including working relationships with colleagues in the Pacific and Asia.
